Director Venu has made a thriller casting veteran actors Mammootty and Aparna Gopinath in the lead. The film basically moves around a prisoner and a journalist who tries to unravel the air of mystery that sorrounds him. Mammootty plays the role of a convicted of double homicide, a prisoner who refuses to leave prison even after he has served his sentence. Munnariyippu is a good example of simple earnest film making. It exhibits thrilling and tense sequences between a mysterious prisoner and a curious journalist.
Aparna takes up the role of a freelance journalist who incidentally chances upon a person called Raghavan ( Mammootty). The pursuit of truth- whether raghavan was guilty or not, whether he was a victim of false judgement has been portrayed in a successful manner. Aparna carries with her a sense of calm, brings out beautifully the ambitious of a journalist and vivacious nature.
Mammootty succeeds in building up the mystery with a swath of innocence, touches of philosophy and the weakness of a lover. Munnariyippu might not go well with a section of viewers, but this is a good example for the making of a smart film.
The simplicity of the script and its smooth nature means that there is so much for the cast to accomplish on screen and they have done justice to their own respective roles.
